Homemade Healthy Tomato Sauce!

This week my mom went back home. We really had a great time and enjoyed our days together. It reminded me of how sad it is living so far away from family, but also how awesome the days are when we’re together. But you know, that’s life!

To stay in the family-mood, today I’m sharing a tomato sauce recipe that runs in my family. As I once mentioned, I have italian ancestors. I only inherited the passport and the love for italian food. I’ve never been to Italy and I can only say like 3 words in italian, haha.

So today’s recipe is a simple but yummy tomato sauce, plus it’s super healthy and easy to make. Honestly, I usually buy tomato sauce at the supermarket because it’s faster and there are some decently healthy ones out there. But of course, home-made will always be better and the taste is certainly more fresh. My parents eat this sauce pretty much every weekend and I want to keep up with the tradition. 

The good thing about this sauce is that you can not only use it on pasta, but also on pizzas or to cover some grilled veggies. I ate it on whole grain linguini and then added some shrimps with a side of brussels sprouts salad. Extremely delicious, I hope you like it :)

Serves about 3-4 cups, ready in 40 minutes

-12 tomatoes
-1 tablespoon olive oil
-6 cloves of garlic, minced
-1 can of 120g of tomato paste (with no added salt)
-2 teaspoons of minced oregano
-1/3 teaspoon salt


1. Bring about 12 cups of water to boil in a large saucepan 
2. Add the tomatoes and boil until their skin starts to come off. Then rinse them with cold water and drain. Allow them to cool for a few minutes.

3. Remove the remaining skin and cut off the hard centre from the tomatoes
4. Add them into a blender and blend them for a few seconds. You can just cut them if you prefer having chunks of tomato in the sauce
5. In the same or similar saucepan, add the olive oil and heat under medium heat
6. Add the garlic and cook until slightly golden, then add the blended tomatoes and mix well
7. Add the tomato paste plus 1/2 cup of water, mix well again
8. Cook for about 15 minutes in low-medium heat, stirring every few minutes 
9. Add the oregano and salt
10. Cook for 5 more minutes and it’s ready, bon app├ętit!
